What would be my role as a Specialty Doctor?
  • to work in a specialty area with specific skills for the role to which you have been appointed - on entry to the grade, you will have broad generic skills and specialty skills commensurate with your level of training. Over time you will grow to have specialty specific skills, possibly in a narrow field, and will develop more generic professional skills;
  • to be able to use your full range of knowledge and skills for the benefit of patients;
  • to work within your level of competence (there is no expectation that you will have the same full range of skills as a doctor who has undergone specialty training). Not all specialty doctors will be able to provide the full breadth and depth of care, but they will be expected to have specific specialty skills and generic professional skills - which meet the required standard as described by the General Medical Council (GMC) in Good Medical Practice and by the relevant Royal Colleges - ensuring they can perform in the job and deliver the highest quality patient care.
Why should I apply for a Specialty Doctor role?
  • as a Specialty Doctor you will be an integral part of the clinical team, operating on similar terms and conditions of service to other medical groups and having more involvement in planning your working time.
  • you will have appropriate clinical supervision and access to a minimum of one programmed activity per week to support professional activity e.g. professional development, audit, teaching, research.
  • you will have fair and reasonable access to study leave with appropriate funding and an annual appraisal to ensure:
i) you are trained in being an appraisee;
ii) you have a personal development plan (PDP) with clear achievable objectives; and
iii) appropriate professional development is identified to support the maintenance and development of your skills in a planned way, supported by a portfolio of evidence.
  • you will be a legitimate participant within your professional group of doctors within the Trust: supported in taking on management, leadership, training and research roles;
  • there will be a lead for specialty doctors, either a consultant or experienced specialty doctor, to offer pastoral support for specific specialty doctor issues.
Duties and Responsibilities

Whilst on duty the appointee will be clinically and professionally responsible for their patients. It will also be their duty to:
  • keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition;
  • involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment;
  • omaintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' as amended or substituted from time to time;
  • carry out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan eg the keeping of records and the provision of reports, the proper delegation of tasks, maintaining skills and knowledge.
OTHER DUTIES

The successful candidate may be required to undertake managerial duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their Clinical Department. Adequate office space and secretarial support will be made available.
